Dutch conference on ElectroChemical Conversion & Materials (ECCM) 26 June 2020

Scope of the conference

It is clear that in our future, energy systems such as renewable electricity will play a main role in the transition to a low carbon energy supply. This transition will be facilitated by COtargets determined by national governments and will require extensive electrification. In the future, however, there will still be a need for other fuel sources (for aviation, shipping and heavy road transport) and for chemical products and materials. These activities and associated production processes are now responsible for more than 35% of global CO2emissions. The big challenge that remains is to produce these fuels and chemical products through the use of renewable electricity, starting from biomass and/or CO2.

In addition, solutions are needed to solve the imbalance between production and consumption of electricity. These solutions lie in connecting networks and production capacity (interconnection), organizing an optimal balance of supply and demand, and in the direct storage of electrical energy. Storage of electricity in batteries or similar systems is an option; electrochemical production of chemicals as an energy carrier is another option. Electrochemical conversion is a promising option for long-term storage as this technology is easily scalable to the amount of energy.

During the conference, the state-of-the-art discoveries in science and technology will be shared by international key notes from academia and industry. Dutch scientists and industry representatives will contribute to an appealing parallel programme related to the theme of the conference.

Dr Katherine Ayers, Vice President Research and Development, NEL ASA / Proton Onsite, United States

Dr Katherine Ayers joined Proton OnSite in 2007 and is currently Vice President of Research and Development. Her technical expertise spans multiple electrochemical devices including batteries, fuel cells/electrolyzers, and solar cells. She has responsibility for Proton’s R&D strategy in membrane-based electrochemical devices, and maintaining and executing Proton’s multi-year technology roadmap. She is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), established in 2010 as a U.S. Department of Energy Energy Innovation Hub with lead member institutions Caltech and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prior to joining Proton, Dr. Ayers spent 10 years at Energizer Battery Company, with responsibility for strategic materials direction, diagnosis of polarization losses and low battery service, and fundamental insight on other production issues. She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry/Chemical Physics at U.C. San Diego and was awarded the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 1991. She also received the Urey Award as the top chemistry graduate in 1993. She attended Caltech on an NSF Graduate Fellowship (1993-1996) and earned her Ph.D. in chemistry under the direction of Professor Nathan Lewis in 1997.

Dr Jiang Kejun, Director of the Energy Research Institute (ERI), National Development and Reform Commission, China

Dr Jiang Kejun is director of Energy Research Institute (ERI), National Development and Reform Commission, China. He began research on climate change relative to energy policy analysis in 1993, focusing on energy technology policy assessment, energy supply policy assessment, renewable energy development and energy conservation. From 1997, Dr Kejun participated in Working Group III of the International Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report and was a lead author for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (Working Group Three Chapter 3) and for GEO-4 Chapter 2. Dr Kejun Jiang’s recent studies include energy and emission scenarios, assessment on energy and fuel tax, research on China’s potential to achieve its energy targets and development of the Integrated Policy Assessment model. He received his Ph.D in Social Engineering from the Department of Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Dr Andreas Peschel, Research and Development Department of Linde Engineering, Germany

Andreas Peschel studied mechanical engineering with focus on process engineering at RWTH Aachen and Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh. Afterwards, he worked as researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in the group of Kai Sundmacher. In 2012, he got his Ph.D. from Otto-von-Guericke University in the field of process system engineering. Since 2012 Andreas Peschel is with the Research and Development Department of Linde Aktiengesellschaft, Engineering Division. He is responsible for the field of process simulation, optimisation and synthesis and the development of electrochemical processes for Linde Engineering.

Prof. Paul Kenis, University of Illinois, Microchemical systems for applications in energy, United States

Kenis joined the University of Illinois Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2000 and became head of the department in 2011. Since landing at Illinois, he has received a number of accolades, including being appointed a University Scholar and a Beckman Fellow. He has received teaching and advising awards from the School of Chemical Sciences and the College of Engineering. In recent years he and his research group have become known around the world for their scholarship and research in electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to valuable intermediates such as carbon monoxide and ethylene for the production of synthetic fuels or other chemicals. They have published results in journals such as Nature Communications and written often-cited review articles on the current status and remaining challenges of CO2 utilization research. In addition to being a leader in electrochemical CO2 reduction, he is active in three other areas: (1) Microfluidic Crystallization such as crystallization of proteins and subsequent on-chip x-ray data collection, or to identify suitable solid forms of candidate drugs; (2) Microreactor Technologies for efficient synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals or anisotropic nanoparticles for lighting applications; and (3) Biological Study Platforms to investigate antibiotic susceptibilities of bacteria, to study tumor cell behavior in low-oxygen environments, and to study protein folding related to Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Mr Jochen Wermuth, Climate Impact Investor, Germany

Environmental impact investor with 20 years of investment experience across all asset classes. Investment committee member of Germany’s new €24bn SWF “KENFO”. Founder and Principal of family office and investment adviser Wermuth Asset Management GmbH, Founder of Greater Europe Fund, Green Growth Funds, Climate Endowment et al. Previously Director at Deutsche Bank, EU & World Bank-financed economic advisor. MA in Economics and BA in Mathematics from Brown University with honors and magna cum laude, passed D.Phil. qualifying exams at the Oxford University.


Dr Kai Hortmann, Project Leader COConversion, Total Research & Technology Feluy, Belgium 

Kai Hortmann studied chemistry at the University of Konstanz, Germany. He made his Ph.D. in the group of Prof. Brintzinger, where he was awarded his degree in 1996. He then joined Fina Research as a researcher, developing metallocene catalysts for propylene polymerization. Following the merger with Total, in 2004 he turned his attention to heterogeneous catalysts for refining and petrochemical applications, with a focus on alternative feedstocks. He is managing a research group since 2008. Since 2017 he is also project leader for CO2 conversion to fuels and chemicals, as part of TOTAL’s CCUS research program.


In addition, the committee is building a true ECCM community of knowledge institutions, companies, governments and NGOs. To this end, the committee organizes conferences in the field of ECCM. In 2019 the first ECCM Graduate School was introduced to further boost the ECCM community across the Netherlands. 50 participants from academia and industry followed a diverse programme of electrochemical lectures. What are the selection criteria?

  • Fit with the theme of the parallel session.
  • Quality of the technological, scientific or socio-economic approach.
  • Balance between contributions from universities/TO2/research institutes, industry, government and NGOs.

The advisory committee will carefully consider all submitted abstracts following the selection criteria. By the end of April 2020 all applicants shall receive information on the outcome of the selection process.  



During the annual ECCM Programme Day, running programmes initiated or adopted by the ECCM committee come together on the same venue in The Hague, preceding the annual ECCM Conference. Updates on the programme of this day will be published on this page. The ECCM Programme Day is by invitation only. Participants are invited via the research programmes involved.

Background information on the ECCM advisory committee

The Advisory Committee for Electrochemical Conversion & Materials (ECCM) advises the Dutch government to make the transition to a CO2 neutral industry based on intermittent sustainable energy generation, storage and conversion. The committee was established by the top sectors HTSM, Energy and Chemistry, with support from NWO and TNO and in collaboration with the Ministries of Economic Affairs & Climate Policy (EZK), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA).

ECCM is the cross-sectoral theme to achieve the above-mentioned transition objective. The committee coordinates efforts in the field of ECCM at national level, by initiating new cooperation initiatives and by adopting initiatives that fit within the scope of the advisory report that the committee has published. From a national perspective, the committee advises the government on what efforts are needed to collaborate throughout the innovation chain.

In addition, the committee is busy building an ECCM community of knowledge institutions, companies, governments and NGOs. To this end, the committee organizes conferences in the field of ECCM and an annual graduate school. More information: www.co2neutraalin2050.nl
